The WA Residential Battery Scheme is a landmark state government initiative designed to help Western Australian households and small businesses overcome the upfront cost of home battery storage.
Backed by $337 million in funding, the scheme provides highly generous cash rebates and optional zero-interest loans for eligible residents who install an approved solar battery system.
Designed to work hand-in-hand with the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, this scheme allows you to “stack” your rebates. By lowering the initial price tag of a premium battery, it has never been more affordable for WA families to store their excess daytime solar power, drastically slash their evening electricity bills, and protect themselves against grid outages.
How it Works:
Rather than forcing you to pay full price and wait months for a government refund, the WA Residential Battery Scheme provides the rebate as an upfront point-of-sale discount.
When you purchase an eligible battery through SAE, we manage all the heavy lifting.
We calculate your combined federal and state discounts and deduct them straight off your initial quote. If you choose to apply for the zero-interest loan to cover the gap, the scheme’s third-party finance administrator (Plenti) handles the simple credit check.
Once approved and installed, your battery will be connected to a VPP, and you start saving immediately.

What the Incentive Gives You & How Much You Can Save
The WA Residential Battery Scheme offers two distinct financial benefits depending on your location and household income:
1. The Cash Rebate (Available to all eligible households)
Synergy Customers
(Perth & SWIS)
Receive a rebate of up to $1,300
calculated based on a 10kWh battery.
When combined with the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, Synergy customers installing a typical 10 kWh to 14 kWh battery can save between $4,000 and $5,000 upfront
Horizon Power Customers
(Regional WA)
Reduce your upfront battery costs with a heavily subsidised rebate of up to $3,800.
When combined with the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, Horizon customers installing a typical 10 kWh to 14 kWh battery can see total discounts exceed $7,000!
2. The Zero Interest Loan (income tested)
If your combined household income is under $210,000, you can also access a $10,000 no-interest loan repayable over 3 to 10 years. This allows you to pay off the remaining out-of-pocket balance using the money you save on your electricity bills.
Eligibility: Who Can Claim the WA Battery Scheme?
To secure the WA state rebate and loan, your installation must meet several strict criteria set by the WA Government:
- Property Type:
The system must be installed at a WA residential property (owner-occupiers, or rentals with landlord consent). - Solar Requirement:
You must have an existing solar panel system or be installing one at the same time as the battery. - Approved Technology:
The battery must have a usable capacity between 5 kWh and 100 kWh, be listed on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved list, AND be on your network operator’s (Synergy or Horizon Power) Supported Solutions List. - Accredited Installation:
The work must be carried out by a Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) approved installer who is registered as an approved vendor for the scheme. (SAE Group is fully accredited). - Mandatory VPP Participation:
You must agree to connect your battery to an approved Virtual Power Plant (VPP), such as Synergy Battery Rewards or Horizon Power’s Community Wave. - Technical Standards:
From May 1, 2026, all new installations in the SWIS grid must meet Western Power’s latest technical compliance standards.
