Make Home Charging Work
with Your Solar Panels
If your home already has solar panels, installing a compatible EV charger can help you get more value from the energy your system produces.
Rather than sending all your excess solar electricity back to the grid, you may be able to use some of it to charge your electric vehicle. Depending on your charger, solar system and energy usage, smart charging features can help direct available solar energy to your car.
- Use More of the Solar Energy You Generate
A compatible solar EV charger can use surplus solar generation to help charge your vehicle, reducing the amount of electricity you need to purchase from the grid.
- Charge Around Your Schedule
Smart charging features may allow you to set charging schedules or adjust how your vehicle charges, helping you make the most of available solar energy or suitable electricity tariffs.
- Connect Your Home Energy System
With the right equipment, your EV charger can work alongside your solar panels, inverter and, where suitable, home battery. We’ll help you understand which options are compatible with your existing setup.

State Financial Incentives & Green Loans
The Australian Government have Federal Incentives for Home Owners wanting to purchase electric vehicles. Whilst most of the state-specific grants have now closed, the Government still support:
Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) Exemption:
Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles (FCEVs) below the Luxury Car Tax threshold are exempt from FBT when acquired via an eligible employer-provided novated lease or company car arrangement.
- Changes starting April 1, 2027:
The 100% FBT exemption will phase down. EVs priced at or under $75,000 will maintain the full exemption, while those priced between $75,000 and the LCT limit will transition to a 75% concessional FBT rate.
- Changes starting April 1, 2027:
Higher Luxury Car Tax (LCT) Threshold:
Fuel-efficient and zero-emission vehicles have an increased LCT threshold of $91,661 (for the 2026–2027 financial year) compared to $80,809 for standard petrol and diesel cars.
Plenti offers a rate reduction of 0.5% p.a. for those financing new EVs up to $90,000 through their collaboration with the CEFC.
The ACT Sustainable Household Scheme offers low-interest loans from $2,000 – $15,000 to help Canberrans make their homes more energy efficient and can reduce their environmental impact with energy efficient upgrades including:
- Electric Vehicles & Charging Infrastructure
- Battery Storage systems
- Electric Heating & Cooling Systems
- Hot Water Heat Pumps & Solar Hot Water Systems
- Electric Cargo Bikes
The upgrades can also help households save money on bills.
Discounted registration for zero and low-emissions vehicles
Vehicle registration fees in the ACT are transitioning from a weight-based system to an emissions-based system for most light vehicles. This means that lower emissions vehicles will pay lower registration fees. Eligible vehicles include:
- zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs)
- plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs)
- hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs)
- low-emission petrol and diesel vehicles
EV Charging FAQs
How much does it cost to install an EV at home?
The cost of home EV charger installation depends on the charger you choose, the distance between your switchboard and charger, your home’s electrical capacity and whether any additional electrical work is required. SAE Group can assess your property and provide a tailored recommendation and quote.
How long does it take to charge an electric car at home?
Charging time depends on your vehicle’s battery size, the charger’s power output and how much charge your battery needs. Many households choose a dedicated home charger that can replenish their daily driving needs overnight. Your vehicle’s charging capabilities will also affect the maximum charging speed.
Can I charge my electric car using solar panels?
Yes. With a compatible solar EV charger, you can use available surplus solar energy to charge your electric vehicle. The amount of solar power available will vary depending on the weather, time of day and your household’s electricity use. You may still need grid electricity when solar generation is low or you need to charge by a particular time.
Do I need solar panels to install a home EV charger?
No. You can install a home EV charger without solar panels. A dedicated charger can charge your vehicle using electricity from your home’s power supply. If you have solar panels or plan to install them in the future, you may want to consider a charger with compatible solar charging features.
Will a home EV charger work with my electric car?
Many home EV chargers work with a range of electric vehicles, but compatibility depends on the vehicle’s charging connector, charging capabilities and the charger’s specifications. SAE Group can help you identify suitable options for your particular make and model.
Is a dedicated home EV charger better than a standard power point?
A dedicated home EV charger is designed specifically for electric vehicle charging and can generally deliver power faster than a standard household power point. It can also offer features such as charging schedules, energy monitoring and solar integration, depending on the model. The right option depends on your vehicle and charging needs.
Do I need to upgrade my switchboard to install an EV charger?
Not always. Whether your switchboard needs an upgrade depends on its condition, available electrical capacity and the charger you choose. A qualified electrician can assess your setup and determine whether additional electrical work or load management is required.
Can I install an EV charger outside?
Many EV chargers are suitable for outdoor installation when installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements and the conditions of the location. Your installer should confirm the charger’s weather protection rating and select a suitable position for safe, convenient charging.
Can I install an EV charger if I already have a solar battery?
Yes, in many cases. An EV charger can be installed alongside a compatible solar and battery system, but the best setup depends on your existing equipment, electrical capacity and energy goals. A tailored assessment can help determine how to coordinate vehicle charging with your household’s energy use.
Can SAE Group help me choose the right EV charger?
Yes. SAE Group can help you compare EV chargers, consider compatibility with your vehicle and home electrical supply, and explore solar charging options. We’ll help you understand the installation requirements and find a solution suited to your needs.
