The Instant Asset Write-Off Explained.

Transform your business energy costs and slash your company tax bill this financial year with the $20,000 Instant Asset Write-Off.

The Australian Government's Instant Asset Write-Off (IAWO) is a powerful tax concession designed to help small to medium businesses invest in essential equipment, including commercial solar panels and battery storage.

Unlike the STC or Battery rebate which act as point-of-sale discounts, the Instant Asset Write-Off is a tax-time benefit.

Normally, the ATO requires businesses to depreciate the cost of a solar system gradually over its 20-year effective life. This scheme lets you bypass that waiting period, allowing you to deduct the entire cost of the system from your taxable income in the very same financial year you install it.

How it Works:

When you upgrade your business with solar through SAE, you pay the invoice as normal (which already includes your upfront STC discount). At the end of the financial year, you simply hand the final invoice to your accountant.

Instead of adding the solar system to a small business depreciation pool, your accountant claims the full out-of-pocket cost as an immediate deduction under the simplified depreciation rules. This reduces your declared profit, meaning you pay significantly less tax  to the ATO.

The Benefits of the Instant Asset Tax Write-Off:

What the Incentive Gives You & How Much You Can Save

For the 2025–2026 financial year, the Instant Asset Write-Off threshold is set at $20,000 per eligible asset.

Your exact cash saving depends on your business’s company tax rate

(currently 25% for base rate entities with turnover under $50 million).

Solar Only

e.g. If you purchase a 15 kW commercial solar system for $14,000, you can deduct the entire $14,000 from your taxable income in a single tax year, not needing to depreciate the value.

At a 25%, that reduces your tax bill by $3,500 this year.

Solar & Battery

e.g. You could buy a $16,000 solar panel system and a $12,000 commercial battery. Because both individual assets are under $20,000 (each), you can write off the full $28,000 combined cost.

At a 25%, that reduces your tax bill by $7,000 this year.

Eligibility: Who Can Claim the Write-Off?

To take advantage of the $20,000 IAWO for your solar or battery installation, your business and the asset must meet the ATO’s criteria:

  • Business Size:
You must be trading as a small business with an aggregated annual turnover of less than $10 million.

  • Price Cap:
The asset must cost less than $20,000. (If your business is registered for GST, this threshold is
exclusive of GST. If not registered, it’s inclusive of GST).

  • Operational Deadline:
The system must be fully installed and “ready for use” by
    June 30, 2026.
Merely ordering or paying a deposit by this date is not enough.

  • Business Use:
The system must be installed on a commercial premises or used for a taxable business purpose.

Why Signing Up Sooner Maximises Your Savings

The clock is ticking on the $20,000 threshold. Under current legislation, the Instant Asset Write-Off limit is set to crash from $20,000 down to just $1,000 on July 1, 2026.

If you wait until after this date, any solar system over $1,000 will have to be depreciated slowly over many years, tying up your cash flow.

Furthermore, the ATO strictly requires the asset to be installed and operational before the deadline – not just paid for.

Commercial solar installations require grid approvals, site inspections, and careful planning, which means leaving it until June could result in missing the deadline entirely.

By locking in your project with SAE now, you guarantee your system is operational in time to slash your tax bill this financial year.
