What Is Grid Connect Solar Power?

A grid connect solar power system is installed to operate in conjunction with the electricity grid.  Installing systems in this way allows you to get the extraordinary benefits of owning a solar power system, while also having extremely reliable electricity.

While the technology behind solar energy may seem complex, understanding the processes of how solar power works is easier to understand.  This is particularly true when it comes to a grid connect solar power system:

How Grid Connect Solar Power Works

  1. The sun shines on the solar panels generating DC electricity
  2. The DC electricity is fed into a solar inverter that converts it to 240V AC electricity.
  3. The 240V AC electricity is used to power appliances in your home.
  4. Surplus electricity is fed back into the main grid. 

During daylight hours, even in overcast weather, the solar cells in the rooftop panels use the sun’s UV rays to generate DC electricity.  The inverter used in a grid connect solar power system changes the power to AC for use within your home or business.  To maximise the results of your solar power system, use your energy hungry appliances during the daytime; ie, pool filters, washing machines, etc.  For more help with this, call and speak with one of our friendly team.

If a grid connect solar power system is producing more electricity than is required, the surplus can be fed into the mains power grid.  Depending on the electricity retailer you are with, this surplus electricity going into the grid can provide a credit on your electricity bill.  When the solar cells are not producing power, for example at night, your power is supplied by the mains power grid as usual.  The energy retailer charges the usual rate for the power used. 



Maintaining Your Grid Connect Solar Power System:

As all the components in a grid connect solar power system have no moving parts, you should expect a long and hassle free life from your solar system.  However, it is important to note that the Clean Energy Council recommends a complete annual maintenance check on your solar system. A fully qualified and experienced electrician should check all of your panels, racking, wiring, inverter and the overall solar system performance. During the summer storm season it is important to remember that all connections and fasteners should be checked against failure immediately after a major storm.
